At Hill Avenue Academy we believe that the Key skills in English compliments all areas of the curriculum and contributes to the social, emotional and educational development of each child.  All children need to be able to communicate effectively in order to express themselves with confidence, read fluently and accurately, with understanding and communicate through written language showing a clear understanding of grammar.

English is both a subject in its own right and the medium for teaching: for pupils, understanding the language provides access to the whole curriculum. Fluency in the English language is an essential foundation for success in all subjects’ The National Curriculum in England, July 2014.

Our aim is to deliver high quality teaching and learning in English lessons to ensure, each child develops and is able to read with fluency, understanding and communicates effectively both orally and in written form to any given audience.

The planning of English at Hill Avenue follows the Statutory requirements for the teaching and learning of English as laid out in, The National Curriculum in England Framework Document for Teaching, September 2014 and the Statutory framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage, September 2014.

In line with the school’s policy and commitment to excellence in English, each class will spend 5 hours each week on direct English teaching. The structure of each lesson at Hill Avenue and the journey of English across the week enables all aspects of the National Curriculum for English to be taught, lessons are uniquely planned and tailored to meet the needs of all learners.

In addition, English skills are encompassed throughout the curriculum. There is a clear emphasis on the teaching of basic English across the curriculum to ensure that children have opportunities to confidently read, write and talk in a range of contexts to at least a national age related expectation.

All teachers provide stimulating experiences and activities to motivate the child, using a range of resources to engage individuals and groups of children.

English teaching is text-based literacy through the use of high quality texts, both fiction and non-fiction. This allows students to immerse themselves in a text at greater depth. Teachers ensure that all of the key areas of learning are covered by following a comprehensive teaching cycle which children will enjoy. The texts children cover are diverse and reflect the community we live in and celebrate talented people from all backgrounds. They learn about interesting themes and challenging topics that will help them develop their understanding of the world.

Children are immersed in reading from Early years through our Floppy Phonics Scheme. In addition to phonics, word reading is taught alongside comprehension through regular individual reading, shared reading across the curriculum, whole class reading and free choice in continuous provision. Individual reading books are colour banded in accordance with the Oxford Reading Tree scheme as well as Accelerated Reader Scheme so that home reading books can be selected appropriately for pupils to practise their reading skills independently. Reading becomes an integral part of classroom learning opportunities and children are encouraged to respond to texts on a personal level.  In KS2 children’s comprehension and enthusiasm for reading is developed further by giving pupils access to and experiences of a wide selection of literature, ranging all the way from comic books to classic literature. Children continue to have access to the Oxford Reading tree books as well as texts from the Project X scheme.

Through the year, we celebrate many events to support English throughout the school.  World Book Day, World Poetry Day, National Writing Day and National Author’s Day are great ways to introduce children to a wide variety of writers and cultures whilst also inspiring them to explore their own creativity and imagination.
