At Hill Avenue Academy, PSHE enables children to develop a strong sense of themselves and their place in the world around them. It embeds our 10 core values through whole school and class delivery of age-appropriate learning experiences that equip learners with the appropriate knowledge and necessary skills to face the challenges of  21st century life. It aims to give children confidence, build up their self-esteem and encourage a sense of self-worth, whilst developing the resilience and risk-taking that will help them to thrive as they grow.

PHSE equips children and young people with the knowledge and skills to deal with a range issues they face as they grow up. It covers a wide spectrum including: drugs and alcohol education, emotional health and well-being, SRE, nutrition and physical activity, personal finance, safety, careers education and work-related learning. PSHE plays an important role in the school’s contribution to the five outcomes of Every Child Matters (ECM), and to their statutory responsibilities to:

• Promote the well-being of children and young people
• Achieve the aims of the whole curriculum
• Promote community cohesion
• Provide careers education and SRE

PSHE is also a vehicle for the delivery of our fundamental British Values:
• Democracy
• The Rule of Law
• Individual Liberty
• Mutual Respect
• Tolerance of those with different Faiths and Beliefs

Curriculum topics cover such issues and themes as:
• Show Racism the Red Card
• Child Soldiers
• Challenging Radicalisation and Extremism
• World Debt
• Democracy in Action in Our Country

It is also a time for teachers and classes to develop their relationships through circle time which can be used to address issues that arise both in school and in the national and international news. This is vital to allow our children to understand the rapidly changing world around us and face it without fear and trepidation but with confidence and consideration.
